Naina Dalal
Naina Dalal (b. 1935, Vadodara, India) is a pioneering Indian painter and printmaker renowned for her poignant explorations of womanhood, emotion, and inner strength. She earned her BA and MA in Fine Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, studying under eminent artists like N.S. Bendre and K.G. Subramanyan. Further refining her skills, she studied lithography at London Polytechnic (1960–63) and etching at the Pratt Graphic Center in New York (1977) .
Dalal’s work is distinguished by its introspective portrayal of women, often depicted as central figures embodying resilience and compassion. Influenced by German Expressionists and artists like Käthe Kollwitz, her art delves into the nuanced experiences of Indian women, reflecting both personal and collective narratives . Over her illustrious career, she has held numerous solo and group exhibitions across India and internationally. Her artworks are part of prestigious collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Indian Art in Berlin . Dalal continues to reside and work in Vadodara, contributing significantly to the Indian art landscape.
