Olaf Van Cleef
Olaf Van Cleef (1950–2018) was a Dutch-born French artist, author, and traveler renowned for his opulent, jewel-like paintings that bridged European artistry with Indian spiritual iconography. Though not related to the famed Van Cleef & Arpels family, he worked for over three decades as a jewelry sales advisor at Cartier, where he cultivated a deep appreciation for intricate design and ornamentation.
Van Cleef’s artistic journey was profoundly influenced by his early visits to India, beginning at age 15. Captivated by the country’s rich cultural tapestry, he developed a unique style that combined pastel watercolors, Chinese inks, metallic papers, and Swarovski crystals to depict Hindu deities and scenes from epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana. His works, inspired by traditional Indian art forms such as Thanjavur paintings and the creations of Raja Ravi Varma, were celebrated for their vibrant colors and intricate embellishments. He often spent months on a single piece, reflecting his dedication to detail and reverence for his subjects.
Dividing his time between Paris and Pondicherry, Van Cleef established “Van Cleef Hall” in 2012, a non-profit atelier aimed at supporting emerging artists. His exhibitions across India, including in Kolkata, Chennai, and Guwahati, drew acclaim for their fusion of Eastern and Western aesthetics. Van Cleef’s legacy endures through his contributions to cross-cultural art and his efforts to nurture artistic talent.
