Sakti Burman
Sakti Burman (b. 1935, Kolkata) is a renowned Indian painter and printmaker celebrated for his distinctive fusion of Indian and European artistic traditions. Educated at the Government College of Arts and Crafts in Kolkata and later at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Burman developed a unique style characterized by pointillism and a marbling technique that imparts a fresco-like texture to his works. His art often evokes a surrealist ambiance, weaving together elements from Hindu and European mythology, as well as personal memories, to create dreamlike narratives populated by humans, animals, and fantastical beings.
Burman’s oeuvre reflects a deep engagement with storytelling, drawing inspiration from diverse mythologies and his own life experiences. His works have been exhibited extensively across India and internationally, including notable shows at the Galerie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, Piccadilly Gallery in London, and Galleria Nuovo Sagittario in Milan. Residing in Paris for over five decades, Burman maintains strong ties with India, regularly showcasing his art in the country. His family includes several accomplished artists, such as his wife Maite Delteil, daughter Maya Burman, niece Jayasri Burman, and her husband Paresh Maity, forming a vibrant artistic lineage.
