Sangeeta Gupta

Sangeeta Gupta (b. 1958, Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh) is a distinguished Indian abstract artist, poet, and documentary filmmaker whose multifaceted career bridges the realms of art, literature, and public service. A former Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, she holds the distinction of being the first woman from her district to qualify for the Indian Civil Services. Her artistic journey commenced with intricate drawings, eventually evolving into evocative abstract paintings that draw inspiration from Himalayan landscapes and spiritual introspection. Employing mediums like oil, acrylic, and natural indigo on diverse surfaces, her works are characterized by their meditative quality and textured depth. 

Gupta has showcased her art in over 35 solo exhibitions across India and internationally, with notable shows in London, Berlin, Munich, Lahore, Belfast, and Thessaloniki. Her 2013 exhibition, inaugurated by former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, was dedicated to supporting fine arts education in Uttarakhand. Beyond painting, she is a prolific writer with 35 published books, including poetry collections in Hindi and English, some translated into multiple languages. As a filmmaker, she has directed 26 documentaries, with seven archived in the Library of Congress, USA. Her contributions have been recognized with numerous accolades, such as the Raja Ravi Varma Chitrakar Samman and the Limca Book of Records for creating the longest painting on textile. Gupta continues to live and work in New Delhi, enriching the cultural landscape through her diverse artistic endeavors.
