Sanjay Bhattacharya

Sanjay Bhattacharya (b. 1958, Kolkata) is a distinguished Indian painter celebrated for his masterful realism and evocative portrayals of urban life. A graduate of the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Kolkata (1982), he began his career as an illustrator in advertising, which honed his keen eye for detail. Bhattacharya’s artworks, primarily in oil and watercolour, are renowned for their intricate depictions of Kolkata’s middle-class neighborhoods, capturing the nuanced interplay of light and shadow to reflect the city’s soul .

Influenced by masters like Rembrandt and his mentor Bikash Bhattacharjee, Bhattacharya developed a unique style that blends classical techniques with contemporary themes. His notable works include the acclaimed portrait series of the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, showcased at the National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai, and Jehangir Art Gallery in 1994 . Over the years, he has held numerous solo exhibitions across India and internationally, including in New York, London, and Dubai. His paintings are part of esteemed collections, such as the World Bank and the Parliament House in Delhi .

Currently based in New Delhi, Bhattacharya continues to explore new artistic horizons, as evidenced by his recent foray into geometric abstractions in the 2024 exhibition “Moving Geometry” at Jehangir Art Gallery .
