Harshavardhana S

S. Harshavardhana (b. 1958, New Delhi) is a self-taught Indian artist renowned for his abstract compositions that blend geometric precision with emotional depth. Initially trained in biosciences at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, he transitioned from a successful career in the biomedical industry to pursue his passion for art full-time in 1993. Being the son of the esteemed modernist J. Swaminathan, Harshavardhana’s artistic inclination was nurtured from an early age.

His artworks are characterized by textured surfaces, inverted triangles, and intersecting forms, reflecting influences from tribal art and symbolic structures. Employing a palette of primary colors and spontaneous hand-painted strokes, he creates a lyrical harmony that resonates with viewers. Harshavardhana’s pieces have been showcased in numerous solo and group exhibitions across India and internationally, including the Bharat Bhavan Biennale in Bhopal and the First Biennale of Contemporary Art in Romania. His contributions to art have been recognized with accolades like the Raza Award, and his works are part of esteemed collections, such as the National Gallery of Modern Art in Delhi.
