Ramesh Gorjala
Ramesh Gorjala (b. 1979, Srikalahasti, Andhra Pradesh) is a contemporary Indian artist renowned for his innovative fusion of traditional Kalamkari techniques with modern artistic expressions. Born into a family of weavers, Gorjala was introduced to the intricate art of Kalamkari at a young age by his uncle, Balaji Theertham, a national award-winning artist. His early exposure to this art form deeply influenced his creative journey.
Gorjala pursued formal education in fine arts, earning both his BFA and MFA degrees from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad. His works are characterized by vibrant depictions of Hindu deities such as Krishna, Vishnu, and Ganesha, rendered in a contemporary style that retains the essence of traditional Kalamkari. He employs a rich palette of earthy tones, including gold, red, and green, to create dynamic compositions that often integrate multiple figures into a unified narrative
Throughout his career, Gorjala has received several accolades, including the Mahatma Gandhi Birth Centenary Memorial Award from the Victoria Technical Institute, Chennai, in 2000, and the State Award from the Andhra Pradesh Crafts Council in 2002. His works have been showcased in numerous solo and group exhibitions across India and internationally, earning him recognition in the global art community. Notably, his art is part of the permanent collection at the Hyderabad International Airport, reflecting his significant contribution to contemporary Indian art.
